FAQ Frequently Asked Question

English version:

1. Atypical Enrollment Mindset

Not a “Mass-Market Hobby Class”In multiple places, Michael emphasizes he deliberately avoids the “cheap hobby-class” model that many local studios adopt. He offers an analogy comparing how you wouldn’t expect a lawyer or physician to have fixed flat rates without knowing your exact needs—he applies the same logic to art instruction.6–8 Initial QuestionsBefore enrolling, he typically asks 6–8 questions about the student’s background, goals, schedule, prior experience, etc. This precedes any firm discussion of fees, underlining that he only provides a quotation once he’s sure he can help.Encouraging Self-ReflectionMichael often prompts prospective students to reflect on why they want to learn art, how serious they are, and whether they’re prepared to invest in proper guidance.Tone and PersonalityThe text reveals an occasionally strong or blunt tone, where Michael might stress that if a student wants a standard, cheap environment, there are plenty of other options. He is unafraid to dissuade individuals looking for a quick fix or “fast-food” approach to art lessons.

2. Explanations by Analogy

The texts include multiple

analogies

to underscore why he doesn’t post standard prices:

GogoVan/Uber ExampleYou’d first tell the driver about your destination, cargo size, route, and any special needs. Only then can the driver name a price. Similarly, for art lessons, Michael must understand your art style, goals, or materials required.Medical and Legal ServicesHe likens these to seeking specialized help: doctors and lawyers do not provide a standard “flat fee” without assessing the patient’s or client’s specific situation.Restaurant or Lunch BoxHe occasionally compares mainstream art classes to “lunch boxes”—standardized, cheap, and mass-produced—contrasting that with his artisanal, individualized approach.

3. Common Student Misconceptions (and Michael’s Replies)

“Just Show Me the Price Table”Michael repeatedly addresses how many people ask for a simple monthly or per-lesson cost right away.He explains that fees depend on whether the student wants small-group or 1:1 instruction, how advanced the technical skills required are, how often they plan to attend, etc.“Why is Your Price Higher?”He underscores that tutors in low-fee classes often juggle large groups and earn minimal pay, meaning they cannot give deep-focused teaching. With his approach, small enrollment and personal attention justify a higher fee.“Do You Offer Free Trials or Bundles?”He doesn’t do large pledged packages or free trials. Instead, lessons are “pay per class,” but also “no penalty if you must miss a session.”He mentions a flexible approach is more beneficial than locking into a cheap monthly plan that might disrupt teaching quality.

4. More About Scheduling & Logistics

Session TimingMost group workshops happen on weekends, typically in the morning or early afternoon.Weekday availability tends to be for 1:1, though it can be small group if prearranged—but it’s more expensive. No Required FrequencyStudents can attend weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. If someone only wants one lesson every two months, that’s allowed (though it will slow progress).Child StudentsHe commonly teaches older kids, teens, and adults. Age under 8 requires a special conversation. He is willing to see if a younger kid’s learning approach fits his style.Material ProvisionPaints, canvases, and other supplies are generally included. One can bring their own painting materials for a slight discount

5. Extended Examples of Who Might Enroll

Full-Time Artist Seeking a Market EdgeMight want not only advanced technical instruction but also help with career direction—like pricing, portfolio building, or global art exposure.Art Teacher or Small Studio OwnerSome text notes that other art teachers or studios come to Michael for training on how to upgrade their lesson quality, attract more students, or standardize teaching methods.Students with Varying CommitmentsSome are “leisure–stress relief learners” who come once a month.Others are “intensive progress” learners (like exam prep for DSE VA) who book more frequent sessions over a short timeframe.

6. Traces of Additional Miscellaneous Info

Communication StyleThe PDF includes many chat-like messages from Michael, sometimes containing emoticons or slightly blunt/colloquial phrases, showing a more personal approach to students. He often references examples from his own 25+ years of experience in the art industry (e.g., gallery representation, publishing artbooks, hosting lectures).Emphasis on “Yes, This is Different”He frequently reminds prospective students that his method is not typical for local art classes, and that the upfront “home studio” or “small group” concept is entirely deliberate.Frequent Mentions of “Mirror Listening”The text references a sales or teaching tactic: repeating or paraphrasing exactly what the student says to clarify needs before proposing solutions.Time & ValueMichael repeatedly points out that, in the end, it’s the result—the actual improvement or deeper understanding—that matters more than a “cut-rate fee.”

1. About the Workshop & Philosophy

Q: What is Nature Art Workshop by Michael-Andrew Law?

A: It is an art studio (sometimes called

Gallery Michael Andrew Law

or

Hong Kong Art School

) specializing in ultra-small-group and one-on-one painting classes. The approach emphasizes flexibility, personalized attention, and high-quality, in-depth teaching rather than a mass-market, large-class, hobby workshop.

Q: How is this studio different from typical art hobby classes?

A: Most mainstream art classes have standardized curricula, large groups, and fixed packages. Michael-Andrew Law’s workshop prioritizes:

Ultra-small class sizes (≤ 3-4 students) or private lessons.Pay-per-class flexibility with no forced monthly blocks.Highly individualized teaching, shaped by each student’s background, interests, and aims.Advanced consulting services for exam prep, professional portfolio building, career guidance, and more.

Q: Who teaches the lessons?

A: Michael-Andrew Law, an experienced and professional artist with over 25 years in the industry, personally conducts the lessons. He typically will not pass you to an assistant teacher unless otherwise arranged.

Q: What is Michael-Andrew Law’s background?

A: He is a best-selling artist featured in multiple galleries, a published author of art-related books, and has extensive experience curating shows, advising other artists, and speaking on contemporary art. Due to his strict standards and schedule, he only accepts a limited number of students at any given time.

2. Enrollment & Suitability

Q: Can complete beginners join?

A: Yes. The workshop welcome all levels—from total beginners to advanced artists needing mentorship or professional guidance. Classes and teaching are always adapted to each student’s skill level.

Q: Do you teach children?

A: Children

under age 8

must be approved by Michael Andrew Law directly—he will assess if the teaching style is suitable for such a young learner. Otherwise, lessons are open to older children, teens, and adults.

Q: I’m an experienced artist. Can I get professional career help?

A: Absolutely. This workshop can help with higher-level techniques, portfolio reviews, branding, marketing, exhibitions, and more. Many semi-professional or professional artists consult with Michael for deeper, industry-specific guidance.

Q: What if I only want short-term lessons, like DSE VA exam preparation?

A: Short-term exam prep is possible, but the fee is usually higher than for longer-term learners (because of the time-limited, intensive nature of exam coaching). Students with only a few months before an exam can still be accommodated.

3. Lesson Format & Schedule

Q: How long are lessons, and how often do I attend?

A: Typically:

Each session runs 2–2.5 hours. You can attend weekly, biweekly, or monthly—there is no mandatory fixed schedule.

A: No. You can pay per class (cash or digital payment on the day you attend). There is no forced bundle or ongoing subscription. You simply book and pay each time you come.

Q: What if I’m absent due to sickness or last-minute conflicts?

A: There is

no penalty

if you miss a class. Just let Michael know as soon as possible. You do not lose any fee because you only pay on the day you actually attend.

Q: Are classes group-based or private?

A: Both are offered:

Ultra-Small Group: Usually 3–4 students max; more budget-friendly than private.One-on-One: Perfect if you require fully dedicated instruction or advanced consulting.

Q: Which days/times are available?

A: Commonly:

Weekend Group sessions on Saturday mornings or Sat afternoons or Sunday morning but not Sunday Afternoon (depending on scheduling).Weekday time slots often reserved for 1:1 sessions. A weekday small-group slot may also be possible but at a higher cost and must be arranged in advance.

4.Pricing & Materials

Q: How much do classes cost?

A: There is no universal "one-size-fits-all" fee, because it depends on:

Whether you want small-group or 1-on-1.If you plan for short-term (e.g., a few months only) or long-term enrollment. If it's weekend group vs. weekday group vs. private.Whether you bring your own materials or use the studio's.

Q: Do you have any ballpark rates?

price list structure from Michael Andrew Law's Nature Art Workshop presents a comprehensive pricing system for art classes with multiple tiers and options. The pricing structure is organized into several main categories, each with distinct characteristics and target audiences.

The workshop offers private one-to-one lessons at a premium rate of HKD 2,100 for standard 150-minute sessions, with variations for different session lengths including shorter 120-minute sessions at HKD 1,785 and extended 180-minute sessions at HKD 2,310. Additional options include bringing your own materials for HKD 1,995, exam or portfolio preparation for HKD 2,270, and classes without seminars or homework for HKD 2,080. All private lesson rates remain consistent regardless of attendance frequency.

A unique Value Exchange Program is available that can provide up to fifty percent discount on tuition fees, though this requires application submission and studio approval. This program applies to all course types and represents the most significant potential savings available.

The Morning Light special discount classes target weekday morning students with three different time options. The standard two-hour class costs HKD 560, a shorter 105-minute class costs HKD 499, and a limited-time special 90-minute class costs HKD 399. These prices already include a thirty percent discount from the original rates. The Morning Light classes have a unique structure where only fifteen minutes of instruction time is included in the base price, with additional instruction available at HKD 55 per ten-minute increment. Materials are optional, with students able to bring their own supplies or pay an additional HKD 70 for materials and cleanup fees. Students bringing their own materials must take art supplies home for cleaning, or pay an additional HKD 45 cleanup fee if studio bathroom cleaning is needed. Storage of personal art supplies requires a monthly fee of HKD 120 plus an HKD 800 refundable deposit for packaging and shipping costs after course completion.

The Morning Light classes require students to prepare their own reference images and materials, though the studio offers assistance services including preparation and research at HKD 50 per item, reference image editing starting from HKD 60, and image printing at HKD 50 per sheet. During the promotional period, Morning Light students enjoy a premium benefit of not needing makeup classes for absences. Optional add-ons include homework at HKD 50 per item, case studies at HKD 250 each, and short seminars at HKD 250 each. Students can upgrade to premium class pricing by paying an additional HKD 250 difference, which includes all additional services. Payment must be completed before each class begins, accepting PayMe, FPS, cash, or credit cards with a thirty percent processing fee.

The KOL Student Discount offers a fifteen percent reduction for students with large social media followings who receive over 200 likes per post and commit to posting about their lessons while tagging the studio. This discount can be combined with other offers, such as the Morning Light discount, for a total forty-five percent savings.

Trial lessons are available as single sessions for new students, with small-group classes limited to four students maximum. Standard trial sessions cost HKD 830, short sessions cost HKD 705, and extended sessions cost HKD 915. These include basic materials and tools, personal artwork evaluation, and the option to convert to regular courses afterward.

Short-term courses lasting under three months offer various frequency options with small-group teaching environments. Weekly classes cost HKD 950 per lesson, while twice-monthly and once-monthly classes cost HKD 1,185 per lesson. Different session lengths are available with corresponding price adjustments, such as short sessions at HKD 805 and extended sessions at HKD 1,045 for weekly classes.

Long-term courses lasting three months or more provide the most favorable rates, with weekly classes at HKD 790 per lesson and twice-monthly or once-monthly classes at HKD 990 per lesson. These courses offer consistent learning progress, cash rebate opportunities starting from the fourth month, and access to more free additional services. Various session length options are available with corresponding pricing adjustments.

An important distinction exists between the Morning Light classes and premium small-group or one-to-one classes. All additional services that are optional and charged separately in Morning Light classes are automatically included for free in premium small-group classes with four or fewer students and all premium one-to-one classes. This includes instruction time, materials, cleanup, reference preparation, homework, seminars, and other services.

The pricing structure allows for various combinations, such as short-term weekly classes with own materials, long-term extended sessions with exam preparation, or combinations with the Value Exchange Program for maximum savings. The system accommodates different learning needs, budgets, and commitment levels while maintaining clear pricing transparency and comprehensive service options for art education.

Michael-Andrew Law's Nature Art Workshop is suitable for beginners, art students, and even full-time artists. We have strict limits on class sizes and do not accept all applicants indiscriminately. Even for beginners, before enrolling, we need to clearly understand your learning goals and requirements. The course will then be conducted according to the objectives mutually agreed upon by both parties (you and the teacher). This interview can be conducted via WhatsApp or phone.

What are learning goals?

Examples of learning goals can include what you hope to learn from the teacher or overcoming difficulties you've encountered in painting. For beginners, your learning goal could be a specific style or emulating the work of a particular artist. Even if you just want to use painting as a way to relax, this can be considered a learning goal.

Of course, for more advanced students, learning goals can reference the following subject list:

Subjects:

Classical portraits

FiguresLandscapes or cityscape Art

Abstracts or expressive art

Comics and Mangas

Contemporary ArtImpressionist Art

Expressionist Art

After choosing a subject, you can select the materials or media you want to learn:

What are learning requirements?

Learning requirements can include your desire to master hyper-realistic portrait painting within a specific timeframe (e.g., one year) or your goal to complete a portfolio by next year. Students who prefer a more relaxed approach can request to learn at a more comfortable pace. Additionally, if you have any other special requirements, you can let us know. This covers the main scope of learning requirements.

How about the fees?

Fees will be discussed after the interview, once we have mutually decided on a goal. If everyone feels the negotiated price is suitable, we can start scheduling class times.

How are the courses conducted?

Courses will be held at the agreed-upon times at Michael-Andrew Law's Nature Art Workshop studio in Fortress Hill. For those unable to attend in person or overseas, Zoom is also an option. You can choose between one-on-one or small group lessons (limited to four people or fewer).

If you feel this is suitable for you, you can continue the conversation with us on WhatsApp (+852 6444 7550) to tell the teacher about your learning goals and requirements.
